It might be common knowledge that a glass of red wine a day is good for the heart and helps keep cholesterol levels under control – but the “red wine pill” is a lesser-known development that’s causing a stir in the medical industry. About 20 years ago, scientists using French translation in London to investigate the low rate of heart disease in France made the connection between the amount of red wine consumed daily by the French, and the protection from ailments like heart disease. Further research led to the discovery of resveratrol, the plant chemical that gives red wine its rich colour, and acts as a powerful antioxidant.
More recently, a resveratrol pill was created with the intent of providing all the health benefits of red wine, without the alcoholic content. This “red wine supplement” contains antioxidants found in plants like grapes, cranberries and peanuts, which are useful for protecting against fungal and bacterial infections. Manufacturers claim that a resveratrol pill taken daily can lower the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and even cancer by preventing the cell damage that could lead to these conditions.

The one-seat GYM Concept Car was created for a competition held by a design consultancy and model-making company, P4 Cad Cam. Da Feng combined eco-friendly transport technology with a futuristic design aesthetic when creating this four-wheeled fitness machine. Medical mirror technology means that in the near future, the humble bathroom mirror will be transformed into a sophisticated medical tool for analysing the body’s vital statistics.
Ming-Zher Poh, a student in the MIT Health Sciences and Technology programme, has been developing a medical mirror that uses imaging software to measure a person’s vitals, from respiration and pulse rates and blood-oxygen to blood pressure. The medical mirror can also transmit important health information to your doctor via email. If you use the medical mirror regularly, it will build an information-rich personal health profile.
